Pride is a clever enemy

Many years ago, in this walk with God, there was a young man who seemed eager and committed to this Living Way. God rested His blessings upon him for several months and many of us believed he would do great things for the Kingdom. Little by little, however, I watched pride slip into his spirit.

A foot of spiritual pride rose up against him and, much like Saul, he leaned on his own understanding, resulting in destruction. This once ‘good man’ fell away and later perished in the world of sin from which he had been delivered.

It was so hard to watch. We felt hopeless as friends because the will of the man was set in his own direction. He really thought he was something! Like Saul, he started out humble and blessed, then swerved into arrogance and pride.

Just look at how obedient Saul was at the start. Then he offered a sacrifice only the Prophet was allowed to offer; and justified it because of others. In his own mind, twisted with self- exultation, Saul made moves contrary to God’s law and convinced himself it was ok.

Let’s take a lesson here dear Christian. There is a razor-thin line between self-will and humble obedience. We walk with The Creator, after all! We know stuff! Surely some decisions can be made simply because we are capable and blessed! True, perhaps. Nevertheless, be careful, Saul, just how much assuming you allow; and never use situations or others as justification for disobedience or pride. God hates pride; but He loves us. This is pure religion…James 1:27 and always pray this simple prayer: Psalm 36:11, remembering that obedience is better than (any) sacrifice (I Samuel 15:22).
