He Gave Me a Gift

Early in the days of our dedication, we saw a wooden sign nailed to a pole: 4-Beds, 4-Rent. That was just what we needed to move closer to the church. The Landlord was a marvelous soul. We believed our new digs to be Heaven-sent.

Finances were strained, raising three little ones, moving, and shifting lifestyle, Yet, we were blissfully happy with our new-found faith and the fellowship of wonderful people.

Soon, however, it fell to us to host an all-church event in our new home. We were excited and made plans. There was one small issue about this house: There were no pictures on the many walls!

In a bit of a panic, and wanting to be a good homemaker, I set off for the biggest Good Will store available. The trek took me over a bridge and into the city. Out loud, alone in the car, I counted the walls and proceeded to ask God to supply artwork of various sizes and content to give the large rooms a homey and inviting atmosphere; and to do it all for eleven dollars or less.

I do not recall the exact number of pieces requested, but don’t you know, He gave me everyone! As I rummaged through the discarded and jumbled paintings and photographs, one by one treasures caught my fancy, and the prices were within budget! There were at least fifteen, some small, some large and some medium. The cash register rang up just the right amount, and I loaded them in the car with renewed faith and gratitude to this God we had just met. One treasure, probably a hotel reject, still occupies a place of honor in my home forty-eight years later.

A beautiful thing happened when I was hanging that piece. You see, I absolutely love the ocean. This large picture was a beautiful view of the sea, a rocky cliff and overhanging trees blown by the constant ocean breezes. But, as I looked more closely, there was a woman sitting on the rocks. She looked like me! She had my hair color and even wore a dress like mine.

As she looked out at the waves, her delight was obvious, and tears found my cheeks as I humbly thanked God who not only gave me all the pictures requested but also included a self portrait of love just from Him to me.

Jesus loves us so much. Watch for the little gifts and personal treasures he sprinkles into our days! There is no greater joy than living for the Master! He will give you apples of Gold in pictures of Silver.
